How to Care for Babies With Sensitive Skin

Babies are come into the world with wonderfully smooth, soft skin. But some babies' skin is more sensitive than others. If your baby has sensitive skin, you'll need to take special care of it.
Steps-
  1. 1
Protect sensitive skin in the diaper area

    • Use all-natural diapers or diapers indicated for sensitive skin (hypo-allergenic).
    • Do not use wipes. They can make sensitive skin very red, and uncomfortable for your baby. Use cotton balls and a bowl of water to clean your baby's diaper area instead. Remember to change the bowl of water frequently.
    • Use a diaper cream if your baby's skin turns red. The best one is Lansinoh Diaper Cream as it is the combination of three different types of diaper creams. Use plenty of diaper cream to cover the area.
  1. 2
Limit or avoid using soap to clean your baby. Water and a washcloth are sufficient for washing your baby, especially in the first year. If your baby starts to smell, use a soap made for sensitive babies, like Mustela or Aveeno. Avoid soaps with fragrances.
  1. 3
Keep your baby out of the sun. Make sure your baby always wears a hat when he or she is outside, and sunscreen if he or she is going to spend a day in the sun (for instance, a day at the beach).
  1. 4
Make sure your baby is not dehydrated and that he or she is getting plenty to drink. Being dehydrated will worsen your baby's skin condition.

Tips

  • Do not bathe your baby too much. It can dry out his or her skin. In fact, if your baby is very young, you only need to bathe them every 2-3 days.
  • Talk to your doctor if you follow all the steps above and still have issues managing your baby's sensitive skin.

Warnings

  • If you see uncharacteristic redness, and aren't sure that it is just standard sensitive skin, then go see your doctor.
